An Empowerment voyage will involve a more challenging sailing itinerary,
following on from the sailing experience & skills gained at Phase 1 (Exploration).
From the very beginning, the young people will be actively involved in decision
making around aspects of their voyage, building on a basic knowledge and understanding of the vessel and its routines. For this reason, Empowerment voyages may not be suitable for young people with no previous sailing experience.

Non-sailors, or sailors who are new to TSYT, who have previous outdoor learning
experience in other settings may be able to take on & benefit from, these more
advanced voyages. They will need to have quite a high level of confidence, good
communication skills and a level of independence, sociability and resilience in
order to be able to hit the ground running in an unfamiliar environment.
If they have enjoyed some or all of the following types of activity;

o Taking regular part in physically challenging, adventurous outdoor
activities such as climbing, hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, dinghy
racing, coasteering,
o Residential outdoor activities such as Guide/Scout camps or independent
camping trips with friends (not family camping trips),
o Planning and preparing for outdoor activities such as DofE Expedition,
o Regular volunteering or employment in an environment where they have to
work as part of a small team,
o Activities which require a significant level of personal responsibility such as
looking after animals, equipment, children, family members, they will probably have the skills they need to get the most out of this type of
voyage.

Tallships have significant bursaries available to support young people from in and around Portsmouth and Gosport:

Bursaries available for young people who are young carers, BAME, have pupil passports, SEMH or EHCP, single parent family, in care or edge of care and youth offending – for additional qualifying circumstances see our online application form.
