Politics and Democracy

What is politics? What is democracy? How does global politics work? These are some of the questions we will be exploring in this course! We will be diving into politics and democracy as concepts, and we will consider both politics and democracy in the context of the UK. We will then turn towards global politics where we will look at the role of the nation state, international organisations, superpowers, and non-state actors. We will end with a scoping overview of some of the major debates and challenges that are shaping global politics today and will no doubt shape our futures tomorrow.

What is politics? What is democracy? These are two of the overarching questions that will guide this course. We will be exploring what politics is as a concept, what it means in practical terms in the UK (from the local to the national) and how politics manifests itself internationally, and we will explore the role of democracy as a form of organising politics.

Throughout this course there will be animations, presentations, videos, articles and quizzes. It might be useful to make notes as the animations, presentations and videos are played in preparation for the quizzes, which are purely for your own reflection and learning.

At the end of the course there will be a resource bank which will include all the external resources referenced throughout the course, as well as some additional resources for each different section in case you want to go into any specific topic in some more detail.
